Lottie's Isle

Description:
Sturgeon Island (Lottie’s Isle) on Newboro Lake is a beautiful ½ acre private island located within an easy paddle to the mainland, and close to Newboro Locks on the Rideau system.
The North side of the island facing the channel has good swimming and a great view of the boats moving through the channel. The South side is very private, and it is there that you can see deer come to drink on the shore of the island just behind Lottie’s.

On the island is nestled a two story, fully restored historic cottage with three bedrooms, a three piece bath, fully equipped kitchen with built in oven and dishwasher, a galley laundry room with washer and dryer. The cottage has a second floor sleeping porch, as well as a main floor screened, 35’ veranda.

Centrally located on the island is a screened 17’ by 17’ gazebo. There you can watch the sunrise or sunset as you please. There are extra cots available, should you choose to use it as a sleeping area in fine weather.

The Rideau Canal is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and was rated #2 as an exceptional historic site destination by National Geographic.

The Rideau Lakes Region is a great place to explore. You can take advantage of the great fishing, boating, swimming, water-skiing, or lock through the historic canal system to the other attached lakes and towns. In the surrounding towns and cities there are also lots of activities, and events to participate in including, golf, historic tours, boat tours, shopping restaurants, area events, and lots more

Notes:
The Living room is "deep comfort zone". French windows open to spectacular views of the water on two sides of the cottage , and a new air tight wood stove keeps the chill off spring and fall evenings. There is a radio but no television nor CD player.
The games closet is chock full of family games for those summer evenings full of laughter.

The veranda has always been the focal point of summer living at the cottage. The long spacious veranda has been used by generations for dining and simply relaxing. It can be used on windy and rainy days by simply dropping the rolled clear vinyl curtains and snapping them down in to place to create a snug wind and rain free room.
Dine on the old harvest table and retire to the other end of the veranda to watch the sunset.

This fully equipped kitchen has a new full size Maytag refrigerator and Maytag dishwasher. It also has a built in Miel oven and countertop stove as well as a microwave oven.
Wake up in the morning to the smell of freshly brewed coffee that you set to be done by programming the coffee pot to your preferred brew time. The coffee pot sits on the original kitchen table, now retired from heavy use. The old dish pan hangs on the wall as a reminder of earlier days and older ways of “Washing up.”

If cooking in the kitchen is not to your liking then enjoy the barbeque provided with propane and cooking utensils.

This three bedroom cottage has two bedrooms up stairs and one on the main floor. The front bedroom upstairs has an antique ¾ spool bed, and large chest of drawers. The back bedroom has twin beds and "dresser". The main floor bedroom has a double bed and dresser.
All mattresses are brand new.

The old bathroom has been fully restored and updated.
Now, the wash stand has a vessel sink rather than a wash bowl and pitcher. The kerosene lamps have been replaced with electric ones.
The chemical toilet has given way to a comfortable flush model. A round shower stall with European fixtures has been added.

Image yourself nestled in a comfortable chair or lying on the cot in the upstairs porch, reading a book surrounded by the sounds of nature.
A great place for an afternoon nap!

The restored cedar lined boat house has 2 narrow slips that will accommodate up to a 17’ craft in the longer slip, 12- 14 in the shorter slip. It will not accommodate larger wider boats.

Sturgeon Island has been in the family for five generations and not been owned by anyone else since the Rideau was formed.
The original cottage was built by William Hall Sturgeon, a merchant in Newboro. He left it to his daughter Lottie: hence Lottie’s Isle.
Lottie, a musician, used it for her summer retreat and after she married Edward Fleming, Captain of the Rideau King and Rideau Queen, she and her family spent their summers there. It is now owned by her grand daughter Maggie who has lovingly restored and updated the cottage built in 1895. This wee gem of an island gives you at your fingertips, good boating, swimming, bird watching and fishing.

In the centre of the island is a screened Gazebo with an "oh so comfortable" hammock. The sunsets over Second Bay have been enchanting lovers young and old for over one hundred years! Loons nesting nearby serenade you, taking you deeper into the Magic of the Rideau.

There is a kayak available at the island.
