The Carriage House Loft at Beaver Dam Farm An Old-Fashioned Farm Vacation
The LOFT at Beaver Dam Farm is wonderful! Comfortable, colorful, funky, and romantic. Recently renovated, our first guests, a sixtyish couple from St. Louis, who have traveled the world staying the best places said . . . . “This is the most romantic place we’ve ever stayed at.”
The Loft is one of two accommodations we have on the farm. The Charming Cottage at Beaver Dam Farm is also listed on this site. Check it out.
When you arrive, and climb the steep stairs to the Carriage House Loft, you’ll be enchanted! The Loft is small, but spacious. The colors, the art, and the views will delight you. The Loft has one queen bedroom and a futon in the living room, thereby sleeping 3 people. There’s one full bath with tub and shower.
The Carriage House is connected to the tack room, which is connected to the Stable/Art Gallery. The owners of Beaver Dam Farm are artists and art collectors. If you enjoy art, you’ll be in the right place. The Stable/Art Gallery is light, bright, and very clean, and has original Maritime art on the walls.
For more art, you can stroll through the gardens where we have wonderful sculptures made by Joe Arsenault, a local carver. Then, stroll up the hill, past the horse pastures lined with fragrant rose hedges to the top where you’ll have a great view of Antigonish harbour and the islands. You’ll find many more perennial gardens here as well as Arthur’s little art gallery, which has been called – “A perfect jewel.” Arthur is a life-long hobby artist who is now concentrating on interpreting the marvelous landscape that surrounds us. His work has been shown in local galleries, and he has a big show coming up in June, 2009 at the Utata Gallery in Windsor, Nova Scotia.
When it’s time to relax after hiking, swimming, sight-seeing, and possibly riding and driving the gentle Fjord horses at Beaver Dam Farm, you will have your choice of places to relax. If it’s evening, you might choose the west facing balcony which overlooks the horse pastures; a wonderful place to sit with a glass of wine. Or, go outside where you have two interesting choices. In front of the Stable/Art Gallery there’s a nice patio with containers of edible flowers and herbs. Sit there awhile enjoying the peace, and be sure to pick some herbs to go with your supper.
Or, you might choose to cross the barnyard to another delightful relaxing spot. There are Adirondack chairs and an umbrella table. Here, you’ll be surrounded with one of the farm’s most gorgeous old-fashioned perennial gardens. Our guests often ask us if our flowers are on steroids. No, we tell them, just good old manure. We’re totally organic at Beaver Dam Farm. Nothing but the manure donated by our horses touches any of our vegetable or perennial gardens. You are invited to walk up the hill and pick some healthy vegetables for lunch or supper. Go between the Art Gallery and the foaling stable and you’ll find our raised bed veggie gardens.
Beaver Dam Farm is in a perfect location for touring the north coast of Nova Scotia. Turn right out our driveway onto the village road, then a left, and you’re on the road to Cape Breton Island, which is a must-see for visitors. Cape Breton is spectacular! The Cabot Trail on the island is one of the wonders of the world. It was voted the #2 destination in the world by National Geographic Traveler’s Magazine.
Another great trip is to Prince Edward Island. The ferry is only 45 min. from the farm, and the crossing 1 ¼ hours. This island, which is a province of Canada, is so small that you can see it in a day, but of course it’s nicer to take more time.
There are also wonderful trips in the immediate area. We know them all, and can direct you. Isle Madame, is one of our favorites. It’s a tiny Acadian island of fishermen, which is 100% unspoiled. Hard to believe, isn’t it?
You’ll also very much enjoy our terrific town of Antigonish, home of St. Francis Xavier University, the #1 undergraduate university in Canada. Antigonish is also home to one of the best restaurants in Nova Scotia. All summer long there’s an abundance of live, professional theatre and concerts - Gaelic and otherwise. Nobody can complain of boredom in Antigonish in the summertime.
If you’re interested in arts and crafts, we can direct you to the good places. There’s a delightful Farmer’s Market every Saturday which we highly recommend.
Our own village beach, Pomquet Beach, is just minutes from the farm by car. It’s a wonderful six mile unspoiled sandy beach that is protected as a breeding ground for Piping Plovers. The water on our coast is said to be the warmest this side of the Carolinas. And, this is true, at least after July. In fact, the water continues to warm up all summer, and by late September it’s absolutely tepid..
we hope you’ll join us for an Old-Fashioned Farm Vacation at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia. We love this lifestyle, and are eager to share it with visitors.
